Captain James Kelly : A giant of a man in Tasmania's history Tony Hope will tell us all about Captain James Kelly. James was the illegitimate son of an Irish convict mother and a cook on the First Fleet. He was born in Parramatta in December 1791, twenty-one years after Captain James Cook first set foot in Botany Bay and a mere three years after the arrival of the First Fleet He went to sea at thirteen years of age destined to become the first Australian born master mariner, a trader, explorer, and entrepreneur. Moved to Hobart Town in 1814 from where he continued his whaling and sealing adventures including an epic circumnavigation of Van Diemen’s Land in 1815/16 at twenty-five years of age in an open thirty-five foot whaling boat. During this circumnavigation he discovered Port Davey and Macquarie Harbour.
