Anchoring By Numbers

A Boon | Published on 7/16/2024
Juliet has a Sarca Excel No 5 anchor, 60 m 10 mm Grade L PWB gal chain, 14 mm nylon snubber 7.6 m long attached to midships cleat.
Rules-of-thumb for anchoring, vary greatly:
  • chain at least 15 + 2 x depth m
  • 3:1
  • 4:1

Anchor Right test table shows  similar in holding power amongst different brands with variation as expected for various seabeds. Again various anchors have similar holding power under dynamic loading for:

  • Wind gusts,
  • swing,
  • swell and wave action,
  • current

"Scope" angle can reduce holding power by as much as 30% at 11o. Note, sea beds are not flat and the gradient of the sea bed can increase the scope angle.
Review the breaking force of the components of your anchoring system.
Explored the elongation of nylon lines used for snubbers and the effect on dynamic loading, see Catenary Anchor Chain Length - Die Kettenkurve - (In English) (trimaran-san.de).
