General Meeting - "Wooden Boat Restoration and Developing Our Disadvantaged Youth"
Captain Sarah Parry is the Master and Managing Trustee for the Windeward Bound Trust. Her presentation will expand on the theme of constructing and restoring wooden vessels and what we do with them. She will discuss the build of Windeward Bound, the restoration of Mistral II and what both of those projects means for, and has meant for, the youth of Tasmania.
The brigantine "Windeward Bound" is a 33 metre symbol of enterprise and commitment to provide youth with an opportunity to enjoy and learn skills otherwise out of their reach.
Mistral II is an important piece of Australia's maritime history, having competed in the first Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race in 1945. She was donated to the Windeward Bound Foundation Ltd by the family of the late Ron Burton to be used as a training "tool" for young Australians. Thanks to Tasmanian State Government support, Mistral II’s restoration is being completed by energetic groups of young people who are part of the MISTRAL (Multi Industry Skills Training Reaching All Levels) program.
The future of the Trust is tied to the development and training of youth with particular emphasis on those in dire need; made to feel helpless by financial, social, lifestyle or family circumstances.
