General Meeting - Sailing a solo nonstop circumnavigation compared to cruising mode
About this event
Jeanne Socrates (born 17 August 1942) is a British yachtswoman who holds the record as the oldest person (of either sex) to have circumnavigated the world single-handedly, nonstop & unassisted via the Southern Ocean’s Five Southernmost Capes. She is the only woman to have circumnavigated solo nonstop unassisted from North America (twice).
She has been awarded the Cruising Club of America's Blue Water Medal, the Royal Cruising Club’s Medal for Seamanship, the Ocean Cruising Club’s Barton Cup and (twice) the Cruising Association’s Duchess of Kent Trophy. She has been made Honorary Member of the OCC and the Royal Lymington Y.C.
In November 2019 the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, named the inner harbour commercial dock in Victoria Harbour, which typically handles a million visitors a year, as the "Jeanne Socrates Dock" in honour of her circumnavigations, three of which departed and arrived at that harbour.
In September 2023, she was inducted into the Cape Horn Hall of Fame in Les Sables d’Olonne, France by virtue of her three single-handed roundings of that Cape.
She is presently on her fifth time solo around the globe (this time in ‘cruising mode’) and is currently exploring Tasmania.
Her talk will look at the differences in boat set up, navigation and life onboard as she settles into a more relaxed cruising lifestyle after her two nonstop circumnavigations.
