In an unlikely series of events, Nick Jaffe turned to the sea at age 26. Departing England in a 26ft boat, he would sail home to Australia, singlehanded over four years. This formative adventure would become the first of several, including a second Pacific crossing, a voyage from Palau to Darwin, the Australian east coast, across Bass Strait in an 86 year old open boat, and most recently, nonstop across the Bight.

The debate will be facilitated and we’d like it to be interactive. There will be ample opportunities for questions from members in the audience.

Rob and Tricia will talk about their experience and why they participate in yachting rallies. Will touch on challenges of looking for and purchasing a yacht in France. The yacht had to be set up for blue water cruising with the associated safety requirements to participate in blue water rallies. The ARC+ (Atlantic Rally Crossing Plus) took them across the Atlantic, where they joined the WARC (World Atlantic Rally Crossing) leaving from The Caribbean, across the Caribbean Sea stopping in Columbia and the San Blas Archipelago on the way to Panama, traversing The Canal. Now back in Tasmania well share their latest experiences of circumnavigating Tasmania on the combined clubs RYCT/GYC VDL rally.

A hands-on experience of Safety and Seamanship
Maximum number of boats will be 12, including 3-4 lead boats
Lead boats: Plan is to put 6-8 people on each boat so that everyone can have a go at the exercises.
The lead boats will be well setup, seaworthy boats, ready for passage making with ready-to-display safety and maintenance gear, preparations for Man-overboard and rough weather.
• Juliene Ian Johnston & Lee Astheimer
Plus we need to borrow 1 or 2 dinghies with at least a 15 HP Outboard.
Saturday
1100 - 14:30
Meet on the beach at the quarantine pontoon within Barnes Bay to discuss plans for the weekend and provide background safety information on towing, ropework, setting up for passage making, repairs, maintenance, MOB and kedging. includes maneuvering under motor and sail, prop walking and analyzing and benefiting from making small mistakes
14:30-16:30
Divide up crews into 3-4 groups on lead boats. Identify crew’s own boat as a volunteer tow boat. Lead boat positions and lashes up alongside the anchored volunteer boat. When secure, the volunteer boat lifts anchor, maneuvered out with the lead boat.
Then, change the setup for a Long Tow and tow for a period in safe water.
Next, set up alongside again, return to the anchorage and anchor the volunteer boat.
If a dock/pier available, we can try to manoeuvre the “disabled boat” on to a floating dock. Set up one of the dinghies as an alongside ‘push boat’.
16:30-17:30
tours of well-setup lead boats by lead boat skippers.
18:00-late
Barbecue—Bring everything.
Social Occasion, with ropework, heaving line practice, demos of splicing and knotwork and seaman-person stories.
